Community History

Bournemouth's Bangladeshi history is closely tied to the restaurant trade in Westbourne and the wider resort town. The Taj Mahal on Poole Road has long described itself as Bournemouth's first and original Indian restaurant, with roots most plausibly in the late 1960s. By the late 1970s and 1980s, student life, tourism, and late-night dining helped make Bournemouth and nearby Poole a viable cluster for Bangladeshi-owned restaurants, turning a modest migrant presence into a visible public culture through food.
